[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] If you’d asked me if a musk and amber fragrance would be on my favourites list I would have said absolutely not, but this blend from Jo Malone London is about as lovely as a fragrance could be. To my nose, the powdery notes of musk jump out and I get a bit of First by Van Cleef & Arpels alongside a dash of No.5.

Jo Malone London Midnight Musk & Amber

If you don’t like sweetness in your perfume, it’s not for you but I absolutely love it…. I think it’s what you might call ’embracing’ – warm and enveloping while being glamorous and feminine.

The top notes are juniper – another reason to love it – and while the green-ness of that note is very softened, a flash of mandarin is evident. The amber just wraps everything up into a somehow familiar presence that’s delicious and evocative. The brand calls it a Bright Young Thing and that’s relevant because there is definitely something of perfumes from the past in this – no wonder I’m getting No.5 vibes from it. It’s the just-opened pot of rouge thing.

It seems that I am lucky to find this in stock – it’s sold out in so many places already, even at £105 a bottle. While fragrance tastes are broad and diverse and fragrances impossible to test right now, you’re very reliant on reviews. I’ve seen some reviews that call it spicy which I just don’t get so there is always a degree of different noses picking out different things. So, all I can tell you is if the brightness of a vintage rouge pot scent is one that makes you smile, this will too. If you recoil from it, leave well alone.
