YSL Chinese New Year Palette

Officially, this is the YSL Chinese New Year Palette (it’s the year of the sheep, by the way, that falls on 19th February) but I’m sure it’s no accident that it has a heart design – a great double up as a Valentine gift, too. Red symbolizes good luck (you’ve got to admit it would be rather good fortune if one of these came your way!) in Chinese culture – more so if it’s accompanied by gold.

Inside, it’s the usual format, in a selection of muted shades for a nude toned smoky eye.

Even though we’re swamped with nude palettes, I like this selection – they’re quite cool nudes which is more unusual, and I absolutely love the limited edition design. YSL are always forward thinking with their limited edition Couture Palettes – does anyone remember the Twitter inspired palette they did? I remember being absolutely desperate for it because it was ahead of its time in embracing social media.

Anyway, the YSL Chinese New Year Palette is £41.15 at World Duty Free for the month of February – or as long as stocks last. I’m not sure if it’s available outside of WDF – I’ve done a quick search and it certainly hasn’t launched on-line.

NB: See.. BBB commenters are the most knowledgeable in the world! If you read the comment thread, you’ll see that someone has spotted that this is in fact Saharienne (no.4) with a fancy lid. Nice work xx

  1. Yes please! Though traditionally we give money in red envelopes rather than gifts for Chinese New Year.

  2. Thanks for your review! Palette is available in the US at Neiman Marcus for $60 with free shipping.

  3. I love this! If only I could afford it too! Such a good move on their part by making it appropriate for Valentines too, sneaky marketing!

Not for me, lovely packaging but the colours too dull for me.

I am mighty P*ssed with YSL and the where the heck are the full range of the new Volupte blushes. The US have the full 9 shades since October/November I was told they would release UK 26th December 2014. Oh no just 2 shades, and the counter staff just are told they are coming by the area managers.

It reminds me of the Couture Palette in Saharienne, but matte version! Anyway, it surprises me that YSL releases this matte version. It’s a beautiful palette, so basic and versatile, like an expensive version of the Naked Basics.

I love this palette, it looks really good! Also- sorry to be such a nag, but it’s actually the year of the sheep, not the goat 🙂 x

You are completely correct.. on the box, it has No. 4 and also the wording Saharienne – as well as Couture Palette Heartbeats Edition.. hmm.. wonder if it’s going out as a valentine thing in some countries… thank you so much for flagging this it – love it when people are so knowledgeable about their products xx

      1. I am glad you looked into it 🙂
There were some complaints about the compacts with Swarovski stones as well which were released last year. A reader contacted me saying I should post about it because they are exactly the same as the ones from permanent collection.

I am glad that this time YSL at least wrote the number and the name on the compact.
Last time around there was only a number and another name.

  9. I love the packaging but I must admit I was disappointed to see the colours inside where so boring and normal, but then again I suppose the colours of a goat are! It would have been great to see some colour, a lovely gold and some inspired from Chinese silk.

I can understand why some find the palette boring, but I totally agree with you that what makes it different apart from the beautiful packaging is that is so cool toned and most palettes are either really yellow or pink.

Where’s the gold eyeshadow? I was hoping the inner eyeshadow colours would be as fun as the exterior. Yves Saint Laurent missed a trick there.
