Would You Rent A Nail Polish?

Hmm.. I was reading in the Daily Mail today about a new US service to ‘rent’ a nail polish. Lacquerous sends out 3 polishes per month to subscribers ($18) but you’re only allowed to use the polish three times before sending back.

I just completely fail to see how this could possibly work. For a start, you can pick up dupes of all the luxury brands in any supermarket with a little homework (bloggers are fantastic at finding dupes!); there really aren’t many that don’t have a close or even exact likeness at a fraction of the price. Secondly, you really have to rely heavily on the person who had the polish before you to keep it in a pristine condition with the lid tightly closed so it doesn’t go thick. Call me fussy, but I think I’d want to know who, with their full blown cold, coldsore or god knows what, had had their sticky fingers all over the polish before it came into my possession! I guess we assume that counters keep a great hygiene routine (we don’t know though) but I feel a bit precious about my polishes and like to know where they came from.

According to Refinery 29, there is a 2500 wait list – we’ll never know if this is true or not, data protection and all that – but given that for $18 – probably about £14, you can get three pretty decent polishes or one premium one, I just can’t think how this can succeed. Who can be bothered to paint and post back?

    This is really daft idea – who’s going to be able to tell if a polish has been used only 3 times before it is sent back?

    Secondly, some people have larger nail surfaces to paint.

    And what about the people who use more coats than others or thicker coats of polish?

    Silly, silly scheme IMO.

    Euw, no, just no. It’s wrong on so many levels. What’s next, lipstick rentals? Also, as you said, you can buy so many nail polishes for 14 quid, how would this be worth it to anyone?

    For that amount of money I’d rather buy so it’s mine. I just find this silly, as you said how do you what the person before has done it? Not for me sorry pass…

    If you can afford £14 a month it would be better to buy something like Rimmel or Barry M to see what colours you like and then buy a ‘capsule wardrobe’ of nail colour from better brands if you wanted to. Sometimes a cheapie nail varnish can do the job just as well if you are neat.
    Don’t think it will catch on! Not hygenic, especially if someone had a fungal nail infection (which is why some shops don’t let you test nail varnish)

    I don’t like renting cosmetics even if it is nail polish. I would rather buy one bottle of high end than having to try and send them back. The polish may be sanitary but I would wear gloves to handle just the bottle. This is one of the reasons why I don’t even rent dvds!

    Beyond the issues with the overall concept, there are some serious concerns about the ridiculous terms of service – particularly regarding their discretion over the amount of polish you can use and your financial responsibility if the package (which is insured) is lost en-route to you. Buyer beware!

    I just… can’t. I don’t know who they are marketing to. It isn’t a sanitation thing, it is just a weird thing. I would rather buy a new, unused Tom Ford varnish every other month than try a used-up, dried-out varnish for $18 a month.

    And it seems like a logistical nightmare. What if I use three coats to achieve opacity three times, and they decide I used too much? What if I have big fingernails? How do I prove that I followed their rules? How much will they charge me?

    What if the bottle breaks or leaks in transit? Am I responsible for it?

    It just has a great deal of potential to be an enormous hassle.

    I feel a bit sad about whoever created the company because they must have put a lot of time and effort into it and it’s been met with such criticism 🙁 I think I’m overprotective of small businesses so maybe I’m just overreacting, but while I wouldn’t use the service myself I think it does at least show inspiration, even if nobody really likes the idea… xx

    Oh EWWWW, I would NEVER rent a nailpolish… it’s ok to borrow a polish from a friend or even to buy one thet had one previous owner (I’ve already swapped polishes or baught one on Ebay before). But the thought of a whole number of people using it before me is just not right. The chance of the polish going bad or even transferring jucky stuff is just way too high.
