I wanted to flag up Tuesday In Love Nail Polish because it’s one of very few nail polish ranges that is water permeable. Water permeable polishes are made using a similar techniques to contact lenses which obvously have to allow air to pass through the lense to keep the eye healthy. Not only does this formulation mean that the nail receives oxygen – in theory making nails healthier than if you used a non-permeable polish, but it also bypasses the Muslim practice of washing for prayer.
I am no religion expert, but as far as I understand it, to perform prayer washing, all of the body must be washed, including the nails – if they’re polished, unless the polish is permeable, then water can’t reach the nail. Permeable polish has been tested by a Muslim cleric who found it does pass the required regulations.
While beauty brands in the UK are far too slow to embrace ethnicities with appropriate product, such as comprehensive colour foundations, it’s interesting to think where permeable polish could lead; or make-up that embraces religious rituals in general. Is it a trend in the making?
Tuesday In Love Nail Polish is currently US only, but you might find it on Amazon or Ebay.

Thank you Jane. I love that you have posted about this. As a Muslim I can’t enjoy nail polish as much because I would need to remove it to pray, though I am happy to take it off. Water permeable nail polish is definitely an eye opener. I reckon the nails being able to breathe is something that can only be good for them
What an incredible insight into a religious need for Permeable nail polish!

This is such a great idea, I’m surprised more brands haven’t done it! With so many women loving both beauty and religion it only makes sense to make something suitable for both.
