Sneaky Peek: New Ruby Woo

[unpaid/sample] MAC’s Ruby Woo is a modern icon in lipsticks. There are just a handful of lipsticks that others know exactly what you’re talking about by name alone. Cherries In The Snow is another that springs to mind and Black Honey perhaps (any others please drop into comments). To be honest, the matte texture has always ruled it out – other than very occasional wear – for me but when I see anyone wearing it I have a little pang of envy.

On 7th October, you’ll get to meet Ruby’s Crew, comprising all new Ruby products – all Ruby Woo, all matte but in different matte finishes.  If you’re a fan of matte, and fussy about your finishes this is an epic level of artistry detail as well as giving some lively typography art on the packaging. In December (and this is exciting for me!) a non-matte version of Ruby Woo bullet lipstick and another non-specified as yet non-matte product which surely can only be a gloss (please!).

So, there is the original Ruby Woo Retro Matte lipstick, with a long last, full coverage look, a new Ruby New Powder Kiss lipstick, then Ruby Phew! Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour in a high pigment liquid for a velvet matte finish and Ruby Boo new Liquid Powder Kiss in long stay 10 hour wear formula and a soft focus finish. They’re all £19.50 each.

The first is Powder Kiss Liquid, second is Retro Matte, followed by Powder Kiss Lipstick and the original Ruby 🙂

I truly love the look of all of these – they’re so vibrant and easily found in a sea of black lipstick cases. Ruby Woo has personality aplenty but even more so now with stand out cases. I think they’re limited edition so if you want one you’ll need to be quick on it on the 7th. I’ve got a few more MAC updates to come – including their Advent – over the next week or so, but I’ve noticed that they’ve got a very good sale on right now.  Lipglasses for £9.90 (£16.50) and the gloss/stain hybrids Versicolour for £11.70 (£19.50) HERE if you want a browse. For me ‘Pirate’ by Chanel (my fav) perfect red. I recently went searching for an Estee Lauder lipstick that was popular in the 80’s – they used to put it in every freebie – found it not on show but in a drawer at John Lewis. It’s called Rose Tea and it’s the perfect ‘my lips but better’ nude. Proper old school classic 😉

Thanks Jane, love the column as always and will be looking for the Ruby Woo in a lip gloss (fingers crossed! )

I love the sound of Rose Tea! I remember Pirate very well – absolutely stunning. Thanks Mandy :-)))

I never liked Ruby Woo (too blue and I have a lot of trouble with reds pulling pink on me; “go tomato or go home” is my red motto) but I LOVE this packaging. I think it’s that font that nails it for me.

I know there are lots of typograhpy artists now but I felt a pull of recognition of that font but just can’t place it, art wise. Can you? I love your motto – needs to be on a t-shirt!

I can’t exactly! It’s not the same exactly, but it reminds me of the Looney Tunes font!

And I should put it on a t-shirt; it would baffle my friends and family as I don’t eat tomatoes! 🙂

that’s even funnier! Yes I hear you on Loony Tunes 🙂

I would say Pillow Talk might be another that has probably reached the same iconic status in terms of name recognition. I have many many red lipsticks but for some reason have never tried Ruby Woo. Might have to take a look

Yes, Pillow Talk! Thank you 🙂

This was a good read and much appreciated the swatches and images.
Two thoughts as I read the post – the font reminds me of the brand ‘Lipstick Queen’.
Ruby Woo is the Pillow talk for Mac

    1. Jane Cunningham

Oh yes Jen, I see what you mean re Lipstick Queen… and I’ve got a Frog Prince sitting on my desk too and didn’t notice the similarity!

As someone who own’s way too many red lipsticks, I want to say I am not excited about this but then I would be lying.

My heart is actually beating faster and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of the powder kiss formulas (even though I own the original, retro matte Ruby Woo), but then I too am excited for the non matte version of Ruby Woo.
I hope you don’t have to wait too long for your press sample.

    1. Jane Cunningham

Yes, red does make the heart beat faster! Roll on next week’s launch 🙂
