I never, ever apply polish without using a base coat to my nails, so while base coats aren’t exactly the sexy side of beauty, they’re certainly essential to act as a hydrating buffer and to prevent nail staining. Once your nails are stained then it’s a heck of a job to get them brightened back up, so it’s better not to let it happen in the first place.
Deborah Lippman All About The Base is ideal (I’m ignoring the CC bit.. it’s way too late for that trend), because it protects and hydrates, fills ridges (to a certain degree), contains strengthening ingredients (biotin and green tea) and acts as a smoothing base. It’s really just about my perfect nail base and I’m very happy to have to it! It does give, as promised, a slightly brightening effect to bare nails, but my nails don’t stay naked for long so that’s not really a draw.
Deborah Lippmann always names her products for songs – this is the match made in nail heaven! Deborah Lippman All About The Base is £18 but hasn’t quite made it on-line yet.
