Dearly Departed Lipsticks

We’ve all got a favourite lipstick – you know, the one that you just feel right at home in. But beauty brands have a habit of discontinuing colours and unless you stockpile a life time’s supply, then you just have to suck it up and try to find something ‘close’. But it is never the same.

A La Carte London (formerly Cosmetics A La Carte) might be the answer, if you have a tiny smidge left from your favourite. Their Knightsbridge based colour specialist can blend up an exact match, from colour to texture, with their Bespoke Custom Blend Colour service. It’s £50 for the first blend, and your recipe is kept on file so you can re-order on-line quickly and easily.

With re-orders also £50 a time, you’re paying a lot for that favourite, but sometimes, you can’t really put a price on a beloved lippie.

It’s also worth noting that if you’ve never really found ‘the one’ A La Carte London can also create you a bespoke lipstick in consultation at their Knightsbridge store.

I just keep remembering my Grandma who was so fond of a particularly lurid coral lipstick – when it was discontinued, she complained for the rest of her life and said every other colour made her look as though she was about to have a heart attack. How I’d love to have been able to recreate the original for her.

You can find A La Carte London HERE.

I think there’s something wrong here. I’m not so sure that the lipstick I was wearing 10, 5 or even 2 years ago is one I should still be wearing. I’m not talking about the slave-to-fashion side of things, but as you get older, your skin tone changes (doesn’t matter if you’re in your early twenties or late seventies, though the older you are the more rapid the change). What suited you a few years ago may not suit you now (and it may need someone else to tell you). I think, therefore, I wouldn’t pay £50 for the privilege. If that favourite shade is discontinued, there’s a reason. Indeed, the reason might not always be because of disinterest in the shade…sometimes availability of ingredients might be the source of the withdrawal from sale. To be honest, I’d rather spend £50 on buying two or three new more up-to-date colours.
