When Unilever invests in hair growth supplements, you know it’s the ‘next big thing’. Unilever Ventures, which is the private equity branch of Unilever is putting money into Nutrafol. It’s a brand that uses neutraceutials to combat hair loss. At the same time, Shiseido is reportedly making their hair regeneration product available commercially next year. The Shiseido science is based on replicating follicles, and was scheduled for a launch last year but was mysteriously delayed.
Karl Lagerfeld is teaming up with ModelCo for a limited edition colour range next year – this seems such a strange collaboration but also intriguing. Let’s not forget that Karl professed to using Shu Uemura make up to hand colour his designs when he collaborated with them on a beauty collection, so let’s see where this goes. It’s such an unlikely pairing!
Something to keep an eye out for is the re-proposed Personal Care Products Safety Act bill, refiled in the USA. If it’s successful, it gives the FDA more control over cosmetic ingredients and would make adverse reactions reporting mandatory. Needless to say, the beauty industry isn’t that keen on this bill and considering its weight to the global economy, the outcome seems weighted in one direction.
Meanwhile, back at Unilever, another lawsuit (previous suit involved St Ives) has been filed by a ‘consumer’ claiming to have had adverse effects from using a shampoo and conditioner that claimed natural ingredients, but used artificial ingredients. Actually, this puts the whole ‘natural’ claim that many brands make back in the spotlight – it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it and plenty of brands use this term in a way that is misleading, in my view.
While we’re waiting for Fenty Beauty (Rhianna) to crash into stores (the brand has lready appointed UK PR and will debut at Harvey Nichols – first product reveal is a holographic lip colour) apparently Mariah Carey is thinking about launching a beauty range. Mariah’s collaboration with MAC was ultra successful, so I’m not surprised it’s got her thinking.
