Random Act of Beauty

Free Beauty Table
Free Beauty Table

Most regular BBB readers will know that I live in London. I love living here – I cannot imagine myself anywhere else in the world. But, on Saturday night there was a terrible incident literally a few feet from my house. Two people were stabbed and are critically ill in hospital. The road was closed off for all of Saturday until the police forensic team had done their work.

In just a very tiny way, I wanted to put the karma back into our street so I put out a little table on the pavement a very short way from my house with two embroidered napkins to cover the top, and piled it up with unused make-up. I added a card to tell people they could take something for free for someone they love. An accidentally sent double set of MakeUp Revolution started things off.

I put my table out at 9.30am and by 11am everything had gone, with some lovely messages left in my book. I made a conscious decision not to have sneaky looks at anyone taking it, so I will never know where it all went. At 11.15 I re-stocked it, again at 1pm and again at 3 til it was all gone.

I get sent so much product that one woman alone can never use (and I do give it out to charity and friends very regularly) so I thought why not let strangers and passers-by feel happy to pick up a gift for someone they love. A terrible thing has happened here, and obviously a free mascara can’t change that, but I like to think that maybe using beauty to put something in the goodwill bank will redress the balance, just a tiny bit.

  13. A really lovely thoughtful thing to do, I hope a lot of people went home with a smile on their face and in turn carried it forward when they gave their item to whomever it was for and again when they told others!

What a fabulous thing to do….and how lovely that everyone appreciated it. My friend got married recently and left a huge basket of toiletries in the rest room for people to use throughout the night, as is normally done at weddings now. Anyway, one or a few people took everything from the baskets before the meal had even started…shocking behaviour!

  19. Clare

That’s so lovely Jane, what a fantastic thing to do. Feel-good factor all round! 🙂

  29. Charlotte

What a beautiful idea. And thank you, for letting us all know that there are people out there that do selfless things – sometimes it’s awful to hear so many bad things each day, but it’s also lovely when you see examples of someone making someone else’s day without expecting anything back for themselves. And I hope that the good karma comes back to you and your neighbours in spades! x

  30. Holly

This is a wonderful act of kindness and I’m sure it made those people’s days!

  31. I have never seen a beautyblogger done something like that: it is so kind and sweet.

  32. Unevenlemming

This is such a briliant idea, I had to share it around. I think some long suffering Mums may benefit some of my old samples laying around, so I can share some love too.

  33. Suze

What a heart-warming and inspiring post. In the same way that nobody expects something so awful to happen in their own neighbourhood, I bet nobody expects to see such a lovely random act of kindness on their doorstep either! You’ve created a ripple effect and put a spring in the step of everyone who reads/hears about this, not just your local community (who are very fortunate to have a thoughtful neighbour like you). I bet you had a tear in your eye reading the comments left in your book – I certainly did! x

  34. Suze

PS If I could say that you’re a wonderful Ambassador for the world of beauty blogging without giving myself a strong craving for a mightily large handful of Ferrero Rocher, then I jolly well would! Haha!

    1. Jane

bless you for that… *you’re spoiling me* 😉

  35. What a lovely idea!

  36. Louise @ The-Beauty-Pages.com

  40. I can’t imagine how did people feel when they saw it, it’s an amazing idea! There should be more people who are trying to bring peace back with little things 🙂

  41. Olivia

    Jane,
What a lovely act you did!
As someone who lived in London when it was relatively safe, I hate to see all this violence happening there! I love that city!

  42. Melanie

What a sweet, kind and thoughtful gesture! I’m sure you brightened so many peoples days and I’m sure they were inspired to do the same.

  43. Hi Jane, I’ll read what the others wrote at the weekend. But want to say: what a great idea! I used to live in East London and things often happened there. I now live in Beckenham and things have happened too but not near my street, although you never know. I’ve been increasingly annoyed at how much make up I want to get rid off without wanting to put it online (too much effort and maybe pointless as most of it is opened) or put it in the bin. This is such a great idea. I used to leave unwanted things outside in Leytonstone, one day, I even ‘abandoned’ a bike (took too much space!). I might do that or put everything in a basket and take it to a BBQ a friend of mine is doing to collect money for charity and people will be able to help themselves. We really need this kind of action in the world we live in today. What you did made me think of the Julie, the yoga teacher I spent a weekend retreat with in Suffolk just 2 days ago. We’re all part of the same thing and we’re all connected. Doesn’t one feel great when we give something for free which will make people happy?

  44. Lisa

Such a lovely idea! Well done hunnie.
