So, this is my little mystery. We used to go to a lot of antique and collectable fairs so I think perhaps I got it at one of those – but I don’t actually remember buying it.

This little pot – which I think might be Bakelite – has a slightly worse for wear mirror on the inside but the most lovely thing is that I can still smell that very sweet powdery scent – it makes me think maybe it’s a rouge pot as rouge was quite often more scented than powder.

I think that perhaps it’s art deco – there’s a little touch of Arthur Ransom about it but equally any fashion illustration from the 1920-30’s although dresses were much droopier than the full skirt depicted here. That said, this is a popular ‘pose’ on vintage rouge pots with similar designs also depicting full skirts. So – if you fancy going on a mystery tour – please do – I’d be most appreciative of any information you might be able to dig up.

A friend was very into collecting Bakelite jewellery she used to trawl car-boot sales and antique fares. She moved to the US around 2009 and we lost touch, unfortunately.
Jane, Bakelite pops up on the antique roadshow now and then and seems sought after especially they early stuff.
Yes, I love the Antique Road show but I’m not 100% sure it IS bakelite. I’ve googled ‘bakelite powder pots’ and nothing similar came up for me.
Hi Jane
Not been able to find a manufacturer that might fit the bill but this cutie is very close:
