Gucci Beauty Liquid Mattes Review

[unpaid/affiliate/ad] To say I’m fuming with Gucci is an understatement – there is no Rene Pink Balm to be had anywhere other than the US. How is this quirk of horrible fate, (which I completely understand is a Waitrose problem) that the brand who will never engage with me under any circumstances a) produces my all time favourite  lip colour and b) then discontinues it, even possible. I have got my friend Simon on the case when he travels to NYC at the end of the month to buy at least two. I’ve even searched eBay and Vinted in the vague hope that someone might be off-loading but of course nobody does because it’s a brilliant colour. I tried to buy some in Milan and thought it was weird that they didn’t have Rene Pink, and then Sephora UK arrived with a big stock of Gucci but no Rene Pink – the signs were there. I’m cursed :-). However, that’s not really the purpose of this post – I have some of the Gucci Liquid Mattes to show you because if you love a matte finish, these are next level in terms of pigment power.

I can’t help thinking that a lip brush would be a much better application tool than a doe’s foot – there’s so much pigment to these that I think accuracy is a key component of wear. However, even though the finish is not to my taste, I have to say they’re sublime in texture – almost moussy.

The finish is very much a soft blur rather than a flat matte – it’s not harsh on the lips at all in terms of visual appearance. Neither is the formula harsh – a combination of vitamin E, hyaluronic and black rose oil ensure that it feels weightless in wear.  I found it to be fairly long lasting – the downside to that is it leaves a stain so you need a proper lip colour remover to completely take it all away.

HOW DARE THEY… that’s most annoying Jane. I am sorry to hear that. I hope they’re reading this and will reinstate Rene pronto. In the meantime, I prescribe a nice glass of something to help ease the disappointment. Maybe there is a dupe / similar product out there. Mission Lip-possible for 2023.
I felt the same when EL discontinued my favourite lipstick Rose Petal. My last tube is under lock and key!

To be fair, I had it duped at Code 8 but it’s not a balm texture – the colour is spot on, however. I’m constantly looking for a dupe – Glossier in Fete is pretty good. In fact, I’ll start wearing that whenever I want Rene Pink and see how I go. Thanks for organising my thoughts Chrissie!
