Lace is quite a familiar theme for make up – especially for the cosmetics arm of fashion-led brands. I didn’t realise that Dolce & Gabbana has made make-up since 2005 and initially put this highlighter aside as I thought it was too recent. It’s quite hard to trace the history of it but at the back of my mind, I seem to think it went away and then came back again, with Pat McGrath as the Creative Director. There hasn’t (that I can find) been any mention of Pat in association with the brand since 2018 so perhaps as her own brand flourished she ran out of time to do it all!

In around 2008, Scarlett Johannson was the face of the brand looking extremely glamorous in a Marilyn Monroe homage, with bright red, slick lips and flawless foundation. I don’t know whether the lace box that this came in was on general sale or if this was a press presentation, but either way, the lace theme was spot on for their fall catwalk collections that featured black lace very heavily.

This palette emerged very much under the direction of McGrath with such a precision over-spray that it looks like fabric. The background is quite a deep bronze – I really don’t recall whether it came in any shade variants.

As you can see, the over-spray sits on a raised lace pattern which is what gives it that closeness to actual fabric. I’d forgotten how beautiful it is. Ten years ago this palette was £32. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem to crop up on any resale sites.
