We are swinging back to the Dior Holiday 2007 collection with this ball of bling. Dior were so good at these novelty limited editions – quite often referencing jewellery (as you’ll see in later posts) and in this instance, using Swarovski crystals to give it extra sparkle.
It came wrapped in a black velvet back with CD embossed tissue paper around the ball.
If you peel back the layers and think about how these products actually emerge into existence, they start with an innovation team who often have to devise made-to-measure tools to bring the ideas to life. These are expensive to produce – they all have to be hand wrapped for a start without relying on machinery to deal with that, as well as – I imagine – the crystals being hand applied because I don’t see any other way to do it. I guess that’s why these special items were always limited edition.
In 2007 this retailed for £54 – when I looked across Ebay the price now ranges from £79 to about £110 for this particular item.
Inside, there’s a sparkly pale pink lip gloss called Pink Gem. There was a beige shade too but that I believe was USA only – for us in the UK it was pink or nothing. I can’t tell you how fast these would sell out – I remember hearing a story of someone who flew to the Isle of Man to pick up the very last one in stock in the country. Even for 2007, it seems a very eighties thing – chunky and over the top – perhaps something Edina from AbFab would wear. Dior doesn’t seem to produce this type of thing any more which is really a shame but perhaps they just got too expensive to make.
