Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely Sheer

Sarah Jessica Parker’s original ‘Lovely’ fragrance, introduced in 2005, was regarded as one of the few decent celebrity fragrances of the time. ‘Celeb’ fragrances are two a penny today and they’re almost always nothing more than a licensing deal with the celebrity very far removed from the creative process. In fact, I remember being at one celebrity fragrance launch where the actual celebrity couldn’t for the life of her remember what notes were in the fragrance, despite it being billed as ‘a very personal’ fragrance.

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely Sheer is quite simple in execution with gardenia and blonde woods predominating which make it a very easy wear if you like a light and pretty floral. There’s nothing old fashioned about it – it feels modern but classic and I could quite easily adopt it as an every day spritz and go fragrance. It’s widely believed that SJP was very much involved in the creation of the original fragrance and that’s what probably marks it out as a credible fragrance in its own right rather than an amalgamation of popular notes put together 1000 miles from its namesake.

I’m not adding in a link because I have seen this at various prices across the internet so a little research will find you the best bargain.

  1. Sarah Jessica Parker was indeed very closely involved in the creation of Lovely and its flankers, and its follow-up Covet. The process of creating Lovely Liquid Satin (an alcohol-free version of Lovely) was chronicled in Chandler Burr’s fascinating book The Perfect Scent, which follows a year in the life of the fragrance industry and shadows both SJP and Jean-Claude Ellena as they each bring a new fragrance to the market.

Burr evidently spent quite a lot of time with SJP and goes into detail about how she developed Lovely to reflect her own preferences in perfume. This probably explains why it’s been such a success – rather than being focus-grouped within an inch of its life, it was created according to one woman’s direction and based on her own layering of a few specific fragrances (one of which is rumoured to be the Egyptian Musk that she and Francois Nars both bought from the same little NYC vendor, which accounts for the similarity in their signature scents).

The other big thing is that Sarah-Jessica has always been a champion of giving good value for money. She’s done clothing collections with budget stores because in her youth she was broke a lot of the time, and she created a fragrance that I suspect has a slightly higher budget for ingredients, because it’s worth it in terms of quality. It’s paid dividends because Lovely is now a classic fragrance.

Lots of young women find Lovely a bit too strong for them, so I can see how Lovely Sheer would appeal to that target audience, and a summer fragrance makes great sense.

This sounds great. I love Covet Pure Bloom too which is proving hard to find these days (lasts well). Time to find the best price. Happy Wednesday Jane xx

  3. I can really recommend the book, The Perfect Scent, which gives the behind the scenes story of SJP’s Lovely. Running parallel in the book is the story of the development of a Hermes fragrance. It’s such a fascinating insight into the perfume world. Alex x

  5. Oh, Lovely. Such a beautiful fragrance I unintentionally wrecked by wearing it daily at a very sad point in my life. If this evokes that without triggering any lingering memories, I will buy it!
