Roger & Gallet Extraits de Cologne

See, I would have said that Magnolia is the last thing that I’d want to smell of – I’m never really sure what it contributes to a fragrance when I see it in a note list. Now I know that it’s a kind of creamy citrus that’s part fresh and part floral. Magnolia Folie, created by Frederique Terranova, is a blend of magnolia with bergamot, mandarin and rose so that it’s not just magnolia but citrus wasn’t the first thing that hit my senses – it was the creaminess. Unless you are a real fragrance buff, I can see how easy it would be to pass magnolia by as something that you don’t necessarily want to smell of because it’s so unfamiliar as a predominant note and more often a filler.

Rose Mignonnerie (and I wouldn’t want to say that after a gin…. or at all actually, I genuinely don’t know how to pronounce it) is a very fresh rose scent with plenty of green notes and a splash of sweetness. If you love a rose fragrance, there is nothing not to like here. There’s a pinch of pink pepper and mandarin and a cedar backdrop but predominantly it is all about the rose. This fragrance is by Aurelien Guichard whose parents produced roses in Grasse and has made a host of well known perfumes including one of my past favourites, Gucci Guilty, and Shiseido Everbloom. No wonder Rose Mignonnerie is so lovely!

These are both unexpectedly beautiful – I’d take Rose over Magnolia any day of the week, but the latter does sit really well on my skin. I didn’t find the last on either amazing but perhaps that’s okay as part of the pleasure is in the spritz and I’m happy to top up as and when. The 100ml bottles are £55 while the huge 500ml bottles are £150 but I’ve spotted that Escentual is carrying the 30ml sizes for £25.50 which seems more reasonable. Go HERE.
