[unpaid/sample/affiliate/ad] A new candle from this brand is always a treat – the Malin + Goetz Otto candle is one of my favourites. So, along comes Bergamot (actually, they released a very limited edition Strawberry EDT and I would love to see a strawberry candle so if there’s any juice left, just saying… ) full of freshness, sunny zest and some surprises.
I know the candle rim looks a bit scrappy – it’s entirely my fault for leaving it in the sun before I photographed it. It arrived, of course, in pristine condition. This brand uses 13% fragrance oil – it’s difficult for candles to hold more than 12%, with 10% being standard, but that’s what makes it so generous on fragrance.
I’m sure I don’t need to explain the scent of bergamot but it is on the softer side of citrus zest with floral aspects. The Malin + Goetz version is sharpened perfectly with grapefruit – it might surprise you to know that the blend also contains bell peppers, cardamom and ginger which combine to give the effect a gentle but present spice, so it’s not your average bergamot by any means. If you remember the Tomato candle from last year (or maybe the year before), Bergamot runs in the same vein of not being at all what you think it will be – it’s a trick of Matthew and Andrew’s to present something complex in a very simple form keeping it understated but surprising. The base is musk, amberwood and sandalwood. I had the Malin + Goetz Bergamot Candle burning most of yesterday – it was glorious – but have kept it by my laptop today unlit to get breaths of the concentrate before I light it again. Bergamot is £44 HERE at SpaceNK, non-affiliate HERE.
