[unpaid/sample] Firstly, this is the last time I have a ‘great’ idea to be literal and photograph RAIN in the actual rain. My hair is unspeakable. But, the news is that Jo Malone has created a second collection for Zara with the inspiration of … rain as a freshening and renewing element. I thought that perhaps the fragrances would have aquatic notes but it seems to be more about the moods of rain from stormy cloudbursts to the lightest droplet showers and the surrounding effects on the senses.
I’m starting with my least favourite personally but Amber & Fig Cashmere is impressive in intensity and last. It’s a cosseting fragrance made fresher by the green fig notes – I feel like I can smell some soapy notes in there too but amber predominates in this blend. Other notes include white woods and orange.
Bergamot and Leather is definitely ‘before the storm’ – it’s smoky and moody with notes of iris, lavender, oud and amber. I’d suggest it as the absolute troublemaker in the class that you can’t help liking despite yourself.
Of course Citus Meze is my favourite. It’s fresh, zingy and plays exactly to Jo Malone’s clever use of grapefruit in perfume. In my book, grapefruit makes everything better – it’s that happy moment when the rain stops and the garden unfurls and springs back to life. There’s a powdery element of musk just below the freshness. Actually, this had the least last on me but I’m be happy to spritz it as often as needed to get that first blast of peel.
Despite its name, Rose Petal Drops is a very un-traditional rose. If you love fresh, powdery and delicate rose, I don’t think this will be for you. It’s very fruity with blackcurrant and lychee and a base of vanilla – I’d love all of these in a pudding but I’m not so sure of it dabbed behind the ears. However, if you adore a sweet and fruity floral, it will be rose heaven.
The fragrances are £25.99 each HERE. Jo Malone’s Rain collection is such a great example of how good fragrance need not be elite or prohibitively expensive. You’ll probably end up asking yourself why any fragrance costs what it does and you’d be right to question it.
