I like almost anything by Van Cleef & Arpels; their fragrances have a signature that resonates with me and although I don’t use it daily it’s always a pleasure to wear. When a fragrance fits like a favourite sweater, there’s no effort to try and like it. You just do. Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie is a little bit off track for the brand – although the familiarity is still there. It’s jasmine based, ultra-floral with a deep sweetness, and accompanies the jewellery range of the same name.
I have to say that the jewellery collection, California Reverie is stunning – do check it out (and see the humming bird) – I think if I won the lottery, I’d head straight for the chunk of rock ring and its diamond palm tree! Actually, I’d probably have to win two lotteries – I daren’t even look at the £££.
Mostly, what I get from Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie is that it smells expensive.. which it is! It’s supposed to sum up California – a dreamlike journey through sunshine. Fragrancers, hey? I can’t say I get that (and I know California pretty well) but there is a sunshine scent to it that rolls up all the nice bits of a holiday (excluding the 3am start, the airport queues, the airplane loos, etc) and a kind of freshness as well. Delicious.
Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie is available at Harrods for £69 and £126.
