That Old Chestnut: Lipstick That Makes Your Teeth Whiter

Poppy King’s recent release of Butterfly Ball Lipsticks is catching everyone’s attention – her lipsticks are always lush and lovely. This time around, I’m disappointed – it’s such an old, old trick to add hints of blue to the formula that give teeth the illusion of looking whiter..Benefit did it way back, so did Sally Hansen, and I think even Avon has done it. In any case, the effects are so marginal as to be, well, not noticable to the naked eye at all really. I haven’t tried Butterfly Ball, but unless they’ve got something ultra-ultra new, I’ve got to feel somewhat sceptical that whiter looking teeth are anywhere near a reality.

  1. if you can cope with a bit of sensitivity, crest whitestrips are a much better option!

A natural alternative is to mash up a couple of strawberries and put it on your teeth with a toothbrush. Strawberries have a slight bleaching effect.

Whitestrips are also great as Amina said, but I get too much tooth sensitivity.

Benefit’s Bad Gal Blue mascara didn’t make the whites of my eyes look whiter either!

  4. Completely agree! I’ll stick to my whitening toothpaste and wear whatever lipstick I fancy :)x

Sounds a little bit gimmicky, you can get blue based reds from any makeup line! 🙂

The only whitening/optical thing that ever really worked in my experience is Laura Mercier’s Bleu Marine tightliner – I think that did make my eyes look whiter, once I stopped poking my eyeballs with the brush.

I don’t think these will *really* make teeth look noticeably whiter, but I still really want one! They do look pretty.

  7. I agree that the blue reds don’t make your teeth look whiter, but I definitely find that more orange reds make my teeth look horrifically yellow! yeukkkk!

I would recommend using a proper whitening product in most cases because of the result it gives. Have anyone tried Stella white brand strips? I have just tried them and they are amazing! 🙂
