Ever since I spotted http://www.londonmakeupgirl.com/2011/07/red-eyeliner-would-you-wear-it.htmlI’ve been wanting to do the red eye liner look. I wasn’t sure how to make it work on me because it is such a strident, statement look. So, consulting with make-up artist, Kenneth Soh http://musingsofamakeupartist.blogspot.com/ he gave me some tips on how to to ride the red eye. Firstly, red eye liners aren’t that easy to come by – I certainly don’t have one in my stash – so I improvised with Bobbi Brown’s Lip Liner in Red (but any lip liner would do) as my starting point. Kenneth suggested doing a ‘double line’ to stop it looking stark. So I did quite a thick line with Red and then on the very edge right by the lashes did a second, very slender line using first Estee Lauder Pure Color Liquid Eyeliner (launching 1st August) in Graphite, a sparkling, steely grey which I would wear as a red eye day look. Then I tried doing the second, slender line with Rouge Bunny Rouge Raven Glaze that gives a proper smack of black and revs up the look – especially if you are doing ultra-black lashes and some kohl on the inner rims.
Kenneth suggests that you blot the lip liner with a tissue to remove any excess oils, add a little neutral face powder, blot again and do a final red line. Hopefully this should give it some staying power.

I would love to rock this look… I don’t htink I could though…
Well that explains where all the hits are coming from today! Thank you 🙂
Kenneth gives awesome tips, as always. I love red liner – it’s definitely something you have to be in the mood for, but it’s fun to do something a bit unexpected sometimes.
Love it and now I want to try myself!
red liner for the poor: you can use red face paint (any brand) and for lasting power, mix it with Ben Nye Liquiset instead of water 🙂 x
Would love to see what it looks like on your eyes!
I found a simple way to get the red liner look: I use Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Resolute, a metallic Ruby colour. It really looks better than just bright red.
I love red eye looks – these look like really good products to try it with!
would be great to see it on your eyes!
The Oxford university cheerleading team have been known to take this a bit further and do red eyeshadow as well! It looks quite exciting when they’re performing!
True story, as a teen goth I got sent to the headteacher for wearing red eyeliner. And I continue my red love with Inglot’s red gel liner. It is amazing, and waterproof.
Would like to see how it works on the eye’s, am imagining vampire eyes but sure it will look far more fashion focused. Maybe need Kenneth to demonstrate!
I thought that part of the reason red eyeliners are rare is because some red pigments aren’t eye safe? Might be something to look into before applying lip or face products to the eye area – a reaction would leave your eyes looking more red than intended!
If it helps, my understanding is that the hierarchy is eyes > lips > face… in other words, if it’s safe to use on your eyes, it’s safe for lips and face, but if it’s only approved for the face, you can’t use it on lips or eyes.
