Media Guidelines From The Samaritans

Before I crack on with beauty posts, I thought it’s worth a mention of The Samaritans’ excellent guide to the media reporting of suicide. It’s clearly not something that’s especially relevant to beauty bloggers, but many bloggers do touch on issues of mental health and wellbeing in general and it’s just kind of worth knowing that the guide is out there.

It’s a very strong topic at the moment and reporting gets more salacious by the minute – the on-line reach is huge and incredibly influential – even if its something that you never touch on yourself, it’s important to know the potential consequences outlined by the Samaritans. We have our own little space in internet world in the beauty community, who are in general, massively supportive of mental health issues, so I thought it was worth a pause in my beauty posts to make the guidelines generally available. The link is HERE.

Wow! That Guide makes very interesting reading but what an absolute minefield. With regard to Robin Williams I have to say that I think pretty much all of the media reports I’ve read over the last couple of days have contravened those guidelines to some degree, some massively so.

Thanks for the insight and for putting the fantastic work of the Samaritans in the spotlight. At the end of the day we’re all human, whether we’re into beauty blogs or not, so this post was a great call.

Thank you for doing this, Jane. I lost my cousin to suicide two years ago and a lot of the sensationalist headlines yesterday took me right back to the day of his death.

I would be surprised if any of the usual suspects were even aware of the guidelines, let alone would be willing to adhere to them. Point no 6 is especially disregarded. Peaches Geldof is an example of that.
