I was honestly prepared to be completely underwhelmed by MAC Prabal Gurung – he’s a hot name in fashion but I really wondered if that could be translated to beauty. Because it looks so glorious, and I wanted it to be as good as it looks in the pictures, I did that ‘I’m sure it will be a disappointment’ thing. I still think that Prabal is not a well known name unless you avidly follow fashion. But, I think that this is the most luxurious MAC range to date – those palettes are weighty, really heavy in the hand and the collection just looks, well, expensive (I haven’t looked at how much each thing is yet – I’ll do it as I go along – so I’ll have a guess at £50 for the bronzer…) so no disappointment at all, here.
Speaking of – here it is. The gold is very yellow – totally bling and rather ornamental! It looks like it belongs in a Dubai hotel or something.
The MAC Prabal Gurung Bronzer is a light, matte bronze. It’s really the perfect winter bronze because it’s gentle with no hint of orange.
It’s very matte indeed but the lightest of complexions can add some tan accents to lift any winter pallor.
Next up, a gorgeous Kohl Power Eye Pencil called Feline – all the usual hefty MAC kohl in this with a very glam exterior. The lipstick I have is Carmine Rouge – again, packaging wise it’s chunky and weighty. All the weight lies at the bottom of the lipstick – the lid is feather-light.
There is no filter on this, what you see is what you get – a huge, blazing smack of carmine red. It’s delicious and terrifying at the same time!
Now, the eye colours are a little underwhelming; this is a super safe duo called Terre but there are other duos (one is a grey mix) – I’m just showing what I have here. There are 14 items in the MAC Prabal Gurung collection – glosses, creme blush, a highlighter and three shades of lipstick.
I have to admit this MAC image of the line up is looking suspiciously bright – it doesn’t quite match up to what I have here.
Of the packaging, Gurung is quoted in WWD as saying, “I wanted a lipstick that, even after it’s gone, women would keep for the packaging”. Totally get the sentiment, but this is 2014 – nobody finishes a lipstick ;-).
I’m guessing this will be very limited indeed because the stockists for the December launch are Harrods Fashion Lab, Harvey Nichols London and maccosmetics.co.uk.
Here’s the total run down and price list – bronzer is bang on £50 and I promise I didn’t look first!
