MAC has created a range celebrating the photography of Helmut Newton. If you know his photography at all, dark eyes and vampy, noir-ish lips was a *thing*. He is one of the most celebrated photographer of all time – controversial and noted for sexualised images of women. Glad to say, I’m just reporting on the make up collection (Dazed has a great article on the man HERE if you want further reading) in this instance.
It’s a small collection: 3 nail polishes, 3 Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colours, a Liquid Eyeliner, the Upward Lash Mascara (don’t ignore this – it’s a little gem with a small brush for properly spiked lashes) and one Eyeshadow X 4 palette. I don’t have any issues with the shades in the Point N Shoot Eye Shadow x 4 palette, but look at the drop! It’s shocking. 3 Mattes and a Satin are included and they all dropped. I used an Urban Decay brush to swatch and even taking into account that I probably require more pick up for a swatch than I do for an actual eye look, it’s not good.
On the other hand, if you love deep and impactful matte shades for lips, the Retro Mattes are beauties.
The blue toned red is Chateau M and the burgundy shade is Self Portrait. The shades do fit with the aesthetic, but I think it’s a bit of a cop out to be inspired by Monte Carlo and Berlin – two of the photographer’s homes. You’d have to be very much a fan for that to be relevant.
