I am obsessed with primates; I read everything I can about them and find them infinitely fascinating. One of the most devastating pieces of TV footage I have ever seen was of a mother orangutan collapsed with exhaustion, clinging on to her baby, having fled from deforestation fires. She had never let go of her baby, not once, depsite having literally run herself into the ground. I have never, ever forgotten it – it’s kept me awake at night wondering how it is that these beautiful creatures, with so much intelligence, emotion and awareness can be made to suffer like this. Even now, I’m getting teary at the thought of her bravery and desperation to protect her baby in the most terrifying of circumstances. In her case, she was found – in the absolute nick of time – by a rescue foundation; even they thought she wouldn’t survive. However, she did indeed survive, but many – with even more horrific stories – don’t.
I am so grateful to Trilogy for their wonderful campaign to pledge $1 to the Borneo Orangutan Protection Foundation for every person that pledges their name on their Facebook site. Literally, just your name – it doesn’t cost you a penny. Please do click HERE
