Honey News

So, my dear little Honey is gone – she went ever so peacefully wrapped in a big huggy jumper with the kindest of vets and not really any idea of what was happening. She had been ill for quite a long time but still ‘there’ and still enjoying life, and then suddenly, she wasn’t – she couldn’t get better so I had to make the call. I know so many of you ask about her in comments and have been so kind in including her in good wishes.

She was the sweetest thing, a real character who expected to be treated like the absolute princess she was. We are okay – it was so clear there was nowhere to go and having had a bonus 2 and half years thanks to a kind and wonderful vet it’s feels a natural end. Honey had a little bit of stardom, featuring in the Daily Mail (dressed in a ‘sleepover’ set – much to her horror, and mine to be honest but that’s what paid for her sister, Coco, to come and live with us so it was meant to be) and The Telegraph in a feature about being a first time puppy owner. In my life, I never expected to have poodles – I fully saw myself with a labrador but allergies ruled that out and we did completely  fall in love with this quirky, bright breed. We never knew really how such a tiny dog could take up most of a king size bed, leaving us clinging to the edges. We were happily twisted around her little paw – she was a good dog, a kind little soul and we are so lucky she was ours.

So please excuse any service interuptions – I’ll trying to get back to normal quickly but I’m just very, very tired because these past few months have been hard. I’m going to sit at my desk as normal tomorrow and see where it takes me. x

  29. Trimperley

So sorry to hear that Honey has passed away. I remember the picture of her wearing pearls and sitting buy you that graced the front of your website for many years. I have had a few cats during my lifetime and cried my eyes out when each one passed away so understand how bereft you will be feeling. The remedy is to find a successor. I lost my last cat in autumn 2019 with not a kitten to be found locally so went to the RSPCA cattery to see what they had. I ended up with a one year old brother and sister who weren’t what I went looking for. But they turned out to be just what we needed and a source of endless entertainment during lockdown. My old cat still has a place in my heart and always will do and the new cats have made a place there as well.

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you so much – that photo is my favourite of her… she had her ‘this is nonsense’ face one while Simon (TheVerySimonG) and the photographer were lying on our bed to take the shot. We laughed such a lot that day. So pleased you found such wonderful successors – we need some time without a dog (to travel and so on..) but nothing is the same now.

  44. Anna Van Munster

So sorry to hear this, Jane… Spending all my childhood and after “student break” again with dogs I can feel what you feeling – parting with them is that horrible price we all pay for the pleasure of living with them… But for them it’s not just a few years – for them it’s the whole happy life and I’m pretty sure your dear Honey had it all and now is smiling from the rainbow at you (I’m still once in a while walk a forest with my very first dog – newfoundland Joy – in my dreams… and then wake up smiling and crying)… Poodles are lovely (well, if you get close to any race you see more of good I’m sure 😉 ) – witty (not for nothing in most of dog’s shows they participate with all kinds of tricks), soft (both to the touch and in their soul) and optimistic, and your Honey was all these and more. My hugs to you from the bottom of my heart…

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you Anna – those are lovely words and I’m so grateful for them. x

  47. Chrissie

Oh gosh Jane and everyone at BBB, I am soooo sorry to hear of your loss. Sometimes the right decisions for our loved ones are so damn hard. What an absolutely smashing little poppet Honey was and how very stylish too. Wishing you all comfort, smile and laugh at those wonderful memories and sending hugs as someone who has been there several times. Lots of love xxx

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you Chrissie – really appreciated x

  48. Jaquie Finn

Hi Jane, dogs get under your skin and that’s for sure. We took in a spanish rescue (half chihuahua, half terrier) for many years – he was hilarious and stole everyone’s heart – then when he passed last year we found another little girl – jacahuahua (yes there really is such a thing!) and she is equally huge in personality given her size. Our cockapoo tolerates all these small dogs stealing his limelight and I am so glad to have the time with them…treasure it for sure and enjoy those happy memories.

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you Jaquie – they sound amazing 🙂

  49. Evie

I am so sad for you. I had a naughty Pekingese named Tinkerbell when I was a teen and when she died, I felt like a member of my family had died. I still remember her clearly.

One by one, our Pekingese (all five of them) began to die and my parents did not get any new dogs. By that time, my brother and I were out of the house, at university / work.

Take a rest. I am also tired, like you. I thought the Corona business was going to be over by end of 2021 but here we are with travel bans and restrictions again. My family are all over the place – Asia and the US. I’m here in Europe and just fed up with panic after panic.

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you Evie – yes I am taking it easy… someone told me tiredness is a sign of stress and I think that’s very true. I’m thinking forward to a time when you’ll have your very own dog and how wonderful that will be. My family is far flung too – but we have done this before and we can do it again so bring the resilience you learned in lockdown 1 and lockdown 2 and travel restriction rule change 101 or 10001 whichever it was … you can do it. When I had a complete melt down last Christmas because it was so difficult to get my son home and my daughters holiday plans were ruined for the fourth time my sister reminded me about their resilience and I’m sensing you have it too. Best love x
