Dora News

I’m taking this week off because Dora has had a serious operation – her condition was an intestinal intusussception – and she has been very poorly indeed. It’s where the intestine telescopes back in on itself so she needed 10cm removing. She was in the animal hospital for five days and has been home for three days recuperating.

We’ve been so lucky all the way down the line – to get an emergency vet that was experienced in that operation and who, despite the low odds, was prepared to do his best for her. She had the most exemplary care possible – it’s only my local Medivet, nowhere fancy, but it’s been a very stressful time – we were just living from one update call to another initially and when we did get to see her just before her operation, it could well have been a goodbye visit. However, she seems to have pulled through on a wing and a prayer – she is a very tiny dog for such an operation – and has started to be a little bit more herself although sore and sleepy.

So, posts this week are scheduled – only one a day because that’s all I had in the ‘bank’, and I’m hoping I’ll be back next week to be more productive but right now little miss Dora has all of my time (which mostly seems to be taken up cooking white fish, sweet potato, rice and plain boiled potato!).

Poor little Dora, I hope she makes a good recovery. You can get tins of food from the vet for post operation feeding, certainly shredded chicken and possibly fish. I can’t recall the brand it might be Hills and was pricey. I swear by Hills Science Plan biscuits for cats, gives them a nice glossy coat. Hills also do dog food. I recently gifted a bag of Hills dog biscuits to a friend whose dog had stopped eating. It did the trick and he is back to normal now. Something to try in the future. Meanwhile love and prayers to you all.

Thank you so much – she is recovering slowly – a little bit more back to herself each day and we have had some tail wagging this morning which is great progress. We are giving her white fish, potato and bone broth at the moment just to try and get her weight up again because she lost so much and going to try a bit of mince later. She will not touch the recovery food – even at her most hungry she will not touch it. I have some recovery liquid that she quite likes and a new make of sensitive food – a mousse thing – might even be Hills that a friend recommended so I will try that. Thinking back, she has never really got along with food and has never been the weight she should be so there is clearly a sensitivity issue. It’s like a massive jigsaw. Just now she is in her bed by my feet just as she used to be and really enjoying the predictability of it being the same as it was before.

I have been reading your blog for years, and never normally comment, but my heart goes out to you, your family and your little dog! I know how much you treasure your dogs, and as someone who has also had dogs for years, I know how painful it is when things like this happen and how helpless you can feel. I trust she is on the mend and hope she is out of the woods now, the sweet little girl xxx

Thank you Anita, I really appreciate that – it’s been really tough (and terrifying) – a lot of sleepless nights but she is making good progress and is really enjoying checking the house and garden to make sure it’s all as it should be 🙂

    Hi Jane
I am so sorry to hear Dora has been poorly, it’s a such worrying, scary time. Your vets sound like they have been amazing and how brave Dora has been. Wishing Dora a good recovery and hope she will be back to her sparkling self soon. Give her lots of cuddles and snuggles, hugs to you all. Chrissie xx

I’m so sorry to hear that Jane, I’m so pleased she is pulling through! What a scary time for you all. Little trooper. She may be able to have some plain pasta as her carb as well just to vary it up a bit, I know my pooch loves it when he’s unwell. Hoping she has a speedy recovery xx

    1. Jane Cunningham

Thank you for that tip – I will definitely try it – we are just trying to work out what she can have and what she can’t to avoid sensitivities 🙂

Fastest recovery possible and the best wishes to little Dora! Let it only be joy from now on… So terrible to see them sick\ill (had some issues with our oldest, Frodo, about a month ago, few days of terror… thanks to our vets, got resolved rather quickly, but still a few extra grey hair added… *well, I’m dying it anyway*)

    1. Jane Cunningham

thank you Anna – she is making good progress – yes, I have a few more greys that is for sure!
