So, it might surprise some of you to know that neon nail polish is illegal to manufacture in the US.. not really because it is known be harmful but because the colours are not FDA approved. However, there is controversy around the safety of true neon shades.
There are new Cosmetic Regulations coming into play this year which is highly likely to make true neon polish a thing of the past. But it’s not just neons that may disappear – several shades might disappear completely from the nail colour repertoire. Believe it or not, it’s not uncommon for non-tested and banned substances to appear in polish. The regulations will make sure that all products and raw materials will have to be disclosed (it’s a surprise to me that this isn’t the case already).
So, if you have some favourite neons out there, you might want to stock up before they go. It’s interesting to hear that OPI have already worked out a legal and FDA approved way to work with neons in their Outrageous Neons collection (last year I think), but it’s only the really big brands with plenty of cash for product development that are going to be able to get around the new rules.

Yeah, it is unbelievable that they are not forced to reveal all the ingredients, i buy a product thinking it was all approved and tested, but glad to hear that there will be more checks, do you know the new rules apply only to nail polishes or is it to eyeshadows too, like the Sleek Acid palette? X
I just teared up. *runs to ebay and buys 6 bottles of china glaze shocking pink and 6 bottles of essie haute as hello*
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!
How strange! I’ve never heard of anything like this before, I may just need to stock up on some neon shades.. hahah 🙂
