I always feel slightly fond of Rene Lalique for his stint at Sydenham Art College – who knew he was a (temporary) south east London boy? He spent two years studying there in 1876 to 1878. Although Lalique is instantly known for his amazing glass work, he actually began as a jeweller, creating spectacular designs for Cartier and Boucheron. Although he was noted in France for his jewellery, Lalique found true fame through his glasswork which is still collectible today and vintage pieces can command thousands and thousands of pounds at auctions (check your attic!). So, I’m excited about the new book, The Art of Rene Lalique, Flacons and Powder Boxes, by Christie Mayer Leftkowith, which focusses on guess what? Yes, flacons and powder boxes! It’s the kind of coffee table book that feeds a beauty addict like me on sumptuous pictures, one after another, for 500 pages, featuring the most beautiful creations for famous fragrance houses such as Nina Ricci, Worth, Houbigant and Roger et Gallet.
At £80, it is no small fry, but my goodness, you get a lot of beauty lust for your bucks! The author is signing copies at the Lalique Boutique in Harrods on 30th November, between 3 and 5pm, and also at Lalique, 47 Conduit Street, between 6.30 and 9pm.
It’s on my wish-list for Christmas, signed or otherwise.
