In 2006, Dior had their beauty novelty game full on – not only was there a lip gloss filled, star shaped ring, but also the Pretty Charms Compact that was bejewelled and jangly. It was called the Dior Pretty Charms Secret Lip Gloss (I still have mine!) that was a heart-shaped locket with crystal balls and baubles hanging from it on a silver chain. Fast-forward to the new TikTok craze for pimping your make up with charms to make it more jewellery-like and we are pretty much back where we began.
Carolina Herrera has a beautiful line in charms to attach to her lipsticks which come with hooks for exactly that purpose. You can pick from flowers, butterflies, hearts or tassels – you can even get a whole keychain going, complete with lipstick and/or gloss and as many charms as you can a) afford and b) cram on.
In the meantime, Lanolips has sped up the trend with a phone attachment in which you can tuck your Lano balm in a move made popular by the brand Rhode when they sent their new balms to influencers with a phone cover and gloss holder combo.
Over on YesStyle, on of my favourite websites for Japanese and Korean beauty has Kaja, a brand that has created a lip jelly tint with a sparkly heart attachment and there’s room for more if you want to go large. Sheglam has used the Powerpuff Girls as inspiration for their charm glosses.
P. Louise has done a reversal of the trend and is making some of their skin care and make up products with a clip on attachment so you can attach it to belt loops, handbags or anywhere you want. Either way that you want to work the trend, it’s very achievable at home with your existing products.
The easiest format is with make up that comes in tubes – the ridging at the end of the tube is the perfect spot to drive through a tack or drawing pin to create a small hole that you can run a strand or a loop through as you can see in the picture above – if you can’t face doing it yourself, head HERE where KittyKats is doing the work! You can even, if you can source a vintage locket, create a lip balm locket by full sanitizing the locket and decanting your favourite gloss into it – there’s a tutorial HERE.
With the exception of the Carolina Herrera charms, most of what I’m showing you is either very kitsch or very young – personally, much as I’m open to charms on my lip balms, I don’t want the Powerpuff girls. It looks like the popular charms are glassy bead chains which is true to the Dior Pretty Charms Compact (original feature HERE) but truly, the world is your oyster – I’ve seen some very cute, tiny leather dogs, chunky gems and you only need to go to branch of Pandora to see hundreds of options if you’re serious about pimping your gloss.
