I’m not such a newbie now on Substack which is a digital platform for writers and content creators to publish their work directly to subscribers. Some say that Substack helps to create a sense of community that’s often missing on other platforms and I’d 100% agree with that – it’s definitely a gentler, less pressing and happier environment to operate in, both for creators and for readers.
My Substack is partly a recreation of this blog, but without any served ads that I know so many of you find irritating, and partly a place for new content. I have a paywall in place for two articles a week and the rest of my content is free to read unless you actively feel you should, or would like to, pay for what you read. Prices across the board can range from £1 a month to, well, the sky is the limit… but I charge £3.50 a month which feels fair and affordable.
A lot of what you can read on Substack is free and generally readers create a portfolio of Stacks to read – it’s interesting to realise that a lot of people read the Substacks they follow over the weekend, all in one go, a bit like a magazine. I think that’s the best way to describe it as a bespoke magazine that you build yourself. Recent paywalled writing has been on why lipsticks cost so much, how talking to crows is the level of thinking we should be at for mental health, cakes and why they’re so much needed, why your turkey neck IS a problem and so on. It’s a bit of a return to journalism as well as blogging. If you’d like to join me on that platform, I’d very much love to see you there :-). My Substack is HERE.
