I feel rather gushy about the Mixnature Beauty Labs – it’s such a great idea. I’ve been through the entire process myself which is easy and smooth (I accidentally emptied my basket just before check-out but I think we can put that down to driver error, i.e. me!) and I’m so impressed with the completed order that arrived in a beautiful box a few days ago.
To explain, Mixnature is an on-line ‘lab’ where you can mix and match ingredients and fragrances to get exactly the product you want. I opted for a shower gel and a body exfoliator, but you can find skin care and hair products, too.
As you go through the process, your first option is to select a base carrier for your skin type – normal/combination, oily, dry or mature. At this stage you can see exactly what ingredients are in the base. After that, you can add in your essential oils. For my shower gel, I chose Peppermint and Sweet Orange. For my Body Scrub, I chose Jasmine and Rosewood.
So, then things get even more interesting. You move to the ‘Extracts’ section, which allows you to choose additions such as chamomile, oat or green coffee, while telling what each extract is noted for, skin care wise. Finally, it’s the Activator selection – choose from Aloe Vera or Silk Protein (or both). Your options of extracts, fragrances and activators depend upon which product you are choosing from the beginning and you’re only offered additions that will bring some value to the product. So, while I could add hyaluronic acid to my body scrub and bio collagen, I couldn’t in the shower gel. Instead, I went for aloe vera gel and silk protein. I put oat extracts in both products because I know it’s a skin soothing ingredient.
I think I’ve made this sound like a long process but it’s so quick. I love the fact that each ingredient has an explanation with it so you can make an informed choice about what you’re putting on your face, hair or body. Each addition is 81 pence, which seems very reasonable to me for what is essentially a bespoke product. The base for the shower gel is £6.04 and the body scrub is £6.45, so even with the additions, it didn’t seem expensive.
I was genuinely delighted with my products – while I personally prefer a sweet mint, I ordered the shower gel with the whole family in mind, and they love a peppermint morning wake up! It’s proving very popular already, although I am keeping the body scrub entirely for myself! None of the Mixnature products are tested on animals and they focus on natural ingredients, so you won’t find any SLS, colourants, silicones, parabens, mineral oils or SLES.
I love the idea that once an order is placed, people at the Mixnature Beauty Labs get to work on putting all your ingredients into one product and have it posted out in super quick time. When my box arrived, my name was written on it, which I thought was a lovely touch, but it was also pristinely presented with the contents looking clean and vibrant.
I like the idea of Mixnature for gifts as well – a beautiful cooling shower gel for summer months, a bespoke face mask or a deliciously scented hair mask.
The end result from trying out Mixnature was the impression of a great concept, beautifully and immaculately executed at a very reasonable price. I’ve seen bespoke skin products before but they’ve always been hugely complicated. I think Mixnature have got the balance of choice perfect – it doesn’t tip over into confusion but gives enough options that the product actually feels like ‘yours’.
