Bye bye tubes! Hello ovals. Chanel’s interpretation of hand cream packaging just makes me wonder why everyone doesn’t do this. Apart from the fact that it’s Chanel (I can’t help it), what I love about this oval packaging is that it bounces back to shape every time – it stays in that oval presumably to the last drop and doesn’t ever ‘squidge’ down. That’s not something I’d though about but much like the toothpaste tube, hand cream tubes can start to look quite sad by the end – technical term is shape memory as in toothpaste doesn’t have any, the Chanel oval does.
The little tip at the end is where the hand cream formula comes out and one squeeze delivers the right amount – there is no mess or residue once it’s out. In terms of formula, May rose wax and iris pallida, both from the Chanel Pegomas gardens in Grasse, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and shea butter. It’s genuinely a very light formula that feels absolutely beautiful on the skin. I don’t notice any scent in particular but it’s got decent staying power and zero stickiness.
Chanel La Creme Main is £45 (50ml) and launches on 13th October.

Not quite a full oval and not Chanel fragrance but Nivea have been doing handbag sizes of hand cream in an oval’ish shape for some while and the hand cream is excellent (also great on feet!) – three different colour packs if I remember. I’m looking at the shea butter version as I type.
I’ll look out for them.
The trouble with modern-day tubes is that there’s so much product left in the tube when you can’t squeeze any more out. At that point, Caroline Hirons cuts her tubes in half so I thought I’d try with a Liz Earle cleanser tube — my goodness, several weeks’ worth of cleansing and polishing left!!
eos used to do a handcream in a similar shade, but it was more curved and pebble like. One of my favourite handcreams I’ve tried actually. Really love this tube shape and makes a lot of sense for hand products.
I was about to say the same! I’m using one right now and this reminds me of that
That’s beautiful, although I would want a slight scent for £45.
But you could get 10 tubs of O’Keeffe’s excellent Working Hands for that price and their tub doesn’t loose its shape either. Admittedly its not as chic but it gets rid of the hard bits of skin.
