L’Oreal Paris Infallible Matte Max Lip Pen

The L’Oreal Paris Infallible Matte Max Lip Pen should be awesome, but it’s not. I really, really don’t get this product at all. They’re part of the ‘sculpting’ range and the theory is that you use the tip of the sponge to apply your pigment and then the side of the brush to blend it in. All well and good if you have XXL lips, but for mere mortals, the brush is really too big for any accuracy.

The end result was lips that looked a bit dry and blurry. I think part of the issue is the formula – unlike the Lancome Juicies, the L’Oreal Paris Infallible Matte Max Lip Pen formula is rather dry and it doesn’t spread evenly; it’s not even high pigment despite claiming buildability. I don’t know – for me these are a fail (I’ve just gone back and had another go to see if I’m being unfair, but didn’t get any better result at all), and it’s not really lip sculpting, is it? It’s just smudging some colour around.

  1. Thanks for this review, I won’t waste my money!

  2. I saw these in Boots the other day and was so confused. Was it a lippie? Was it an eyeshadow pretending to be a lippie? It was all too much for me and I didn’t bother picking any up and now I’m glad I didn’t!

  3. These look so interesting! I would love to try this!

  5. Wish i had held off and waited for this review. i bought one the other day and i didn’t like it either

These are underwhelming when compared to Color Riche for example. Shame!

  7. The only reason I still find this intriguing is that years and years (and years) ago Cover Girl had a lipstick powder and balm compact that I stole from my older sister (after much googling: Lip Advance Lasting Lipcolor). Since I was eight and faced misdemeanor charges in Sister Court if my crime was discovered, I don’t know that it worked well, but I loved it.

Which is to say I am not above buying this for curiosity purposes.

  8. The name sounds exciting, I was hoping they’d be a bit like the Sephora or Kat Von D matte liquid lipsticks that everyone seems to rave about but I wasn’t expecting them to have that applicator!! It looks like dodgy eyeshadow ‘pen’! The colours look very off too, I don’t think I’ll be even taking a proper look at these the next time I’m in Boots. How disappointing. Stop with the gimmicks and just give us good products!

I agree. I’m not sure what the hell is going on with them or why L’Oreal thought this was innovative. I’ve seen MUA’s top a lipstick with pigment on the runway, but the sponge here just seems messy.

  10. Oh wow, they don’t look anything like what I thought they would. Perhaps try using them on top of other lipsticks for an ombre effect?!

Matte lipsticks are everywhere! I want to try!

  12. These look rather interesting and different… I won’t buy one straight away after your review, but I will have a look at them when I’m in Boots next and see what I think… Although I think I’ll just stick to what your review states… Lame, and gimicky. 😛

  13. Great colors!! Would like to test these babies!!!

  14. I completely agree! I was so disappointed with these, the colour transfer was poor and they felt really dry!
