I know that BBB readers love a sumptuous makeup book, so the lavish looks in Art & Makeup by Lan Nguyen-Grealis are going to be right up your street. Lan is one of those make-up artist that’s flown under the radar in terms of the general public (so, not a ‘name’ like Charlotte Tilbury or Pat McGrath) but her body of work is huge, intensely skilled and highly diverse.
Her forthcoming book includes pictures and a forward by Rankin and uses inspiration from art, cinema, sculpture and performance art to create looks that are astounding. While the photographs show extreme versions of makeup to showcase the artistic skills of Lan, they’re a brilliant bouncing board for your own ideas, whether taking small elements or recreating a whole look.
The book also includes step by step deconstructions to showcase techniques, plus how-to’s on topics I haven’t seen covered before such as how to create a smoky eye on small lids. She has also, for each look, detailed what make up has been used.
