Believe it or not, I have occasionally had emails or comments from people who think that because I don’t light all of the candles, I’m secretly Ebaying them. I promise I’m not but I really balked at lighting these literally just for a photo when in truth, I’m saving them for Christmas Eve. I’ve had this set before, love it, and Une Foret d’Or Noel is literally the most Christmassy scent I can think of, save for Jo Malone’s Pine & Eucalyptus which for a change, I don’t have this year.
This year we are having Christmas at home – it’s very unusual for us because we have family far and wide and normally travel. That bit of Christmas is always horribly stressful – dragging dogs and gifts on the last train out of London towards the north on Christmas Eve is fraught until you’re all settled in your seats (praying they weren’t double booked!). So all the ‘homely’ things, I don’t normally do. A few nominal decorations is about it – but this year we have a tree all ready and waiting to be decorated, we’re planning food, wine and time with friends as well as really looking forward to a proper wind down. Christmas with family is lovely but it’s never exactly relaxing and the thought that I don’t have to even get out of my PJs if I don’t want to is just bliss. NB: I still have to walk the dog and I don’t think I’ll do it in pyjamas – but that option is reserved!
It’s the first year in many I’ve had reason to think about what candles to burn on Christmas day or eve – we have close friends coming for dinner on Christmas Eve and people dropping by on Christmas Day so I want the house to smell festive and welcoming. Annick Goutal candles aren’t cheap – they’re really expensive at £54 for three small ones – but they feel and smell so special. There are three in the set – Foret is the one I love best, followed by Ambre which is warm and embracing, and finally Eau d’Hadrien, inspired by Italian orchards with orangey notes. They’re HERE.
