Worth Watching

I like this short film from Dove about how women perceive each other on first meeting; we all judge on looks whether we want to or not, but that’s generally thought to be a bad thing. I liked that a lot of the women had complimentary comments about each other, as well as some wildly inaccurate, and some very intuative perceptions.

That was interesting, if a little predictable: I was waiting for the elaborate design eyebrow punk to reveal her bourgeois job, and the meek little one to reveal she is in fact a prize fighter. Quelle surprise! I have still not forgiiven Dove for their previous film, ‘the campaign for real beauty’… Whilst simaltaneously they continue to be one of the main culprits for churning out these images of perfection to us, those new, more underhand, examples of ‘beauty’ were verging on offensive. I wish they wouldn’t insist on manipulating us like this, it actually strikes me as possibly even insulting to women! Yes, if I were a man, I can imagine thinking, ‘how silly and sentimental these women are, to be moved by all this claptrap.’ It’s infuriating, it really is.

  2. My bugbear with Dove is the implication that somehow our underarms need ‘pro-ageing’. It’s as silly as an anti-ageing product for knees that I came across, and only serves to highlight areas that don’t really have any business being ‘anti – or as they call it – Pro-aged’. Thanks for your insightful comments X BBB

    haha ‘pro-aged’?!
It’s exactly this surreptitious way of making us feel inadequate. It’s like: we’re immune from seeing gorgeous models frolick about, so why not show us above-average ‘normal’ people we might identify with and compare ourselves to.
And whilst we’re at at it, consider whether every inch of our anatomy is up to par. Even bits we thought didn’t count. Making me self-conscious about my underarm, Dove, was a step too far!
