[unpaid/affililate] I’m very particular about my sweatshirts – I like them loose and baggy with a neck that doesn’t strangle me with a fine cotton that’s not brushed on the inside. Luckily for me, the sales have been my friend recently and I have picked up two that I’m mighty pleased with. The first is by HUSH in a pink tie-dye with grey palm trees – it’s a good investment for days when you just want to be full of brightness and also for next spring/summer when your cashmere is folded away but it’s not quite warm enough for t-shirts. It’s £30 reduced from £59 HERE. The second is from Eleven Loves – a new brand discovery for me and I was at home in their Tiger sweat as soon as I put it on. In fact, the sweatshirt went from box to body in about 30 seconds flat and stayed on all day. It’s also £30 reduced from £60 HERE.
You will silently thank me (although no need to stay silent – I’m open for praise 😉) for advising you to stock up on long socks to see you through the chilly winter. Wide leg trousers have a lot to answer to, not least the fact that your shins, surrounded by November air, will freeze. You can opt for the Uniqlo Heat-Tech version, £7.90 HERE (and yes, they do men’s long socks too) or M&S have some delightfully soft pairs for £8 HERE (for two pairs) that feel cosy and comfy on the legs.
Two films to see (or not). The first is Lee, the story of photographer Lee Miller which captures the pre-war (II) era so perfectly and leads us down a path of devastation as war breaks out. Lee was one of the first reporters and photographers to uncover the horrors of the death camps. Kate Winslet is epic in this – it’s a hard but riveting watch. A startling aspect is that, model turned photographer, was a war reporter for Vogue. It’s hard to imagine today’s Vogue employing a war reporter and shows just how adaptive print had to be in those times.
The second film stars Demi Moore as an ageing (I say this, she’s in her 50’s so make of that what you will) TV fitness guru who is offered an anti-ageing ‘Substance’ that comes with strings attached. I won’t give the plot away but it’s being heralded as a commentary on ageing and the standards that are set by men for women to be in the media. I know it sounds fascinating but if you are not able to withstand gore, do not go and see it. I watch a lot of medical programs (open heart surgery, etc, etc) so feel fairly hardened to blood and guts but I left before the end. Demi is spectacular throughout.
A shout-out for M&S Dress The Nation, the ITV competition show where a set of wanna-be designers show their fashion skills with a view to working as a designer at M&S. It’s got old Bake Off vibes, is the gentlest of watches and for me the best part is the M&S judges who are so M&S it’s not true – there’s a lot of brow-raising, mouth moues and barely contained disappointment. It’s fab.
Don’t forget, if you bought one of the Japanese style flower frogs HERE that I mentioned a few weeks ago, it’s berry time and they make such a lovely display for the frog.
