The First Ever Make-Up Tutorial?

I’ve been browsing old Pathe beauty films and this one from 1936 will shock you to the bones! There’s a very odd face measuring device to determine the triangular area that should have blusher (and plenty of it, by the looks of things) and some, um, colouring in with lipstick. It’s a beauty must see:

And, you cannot miss this ad for Max Factor’s Top Secret Hair Spray; that lady’s hair would not move if you blasted it with dynamite.

  1. That triangle method looks err interesting!!

  2. I’m not sure what shocks me the most – the amount of blusher or the amount of hairspray! LOL

Lol, entertaining! I love anything from the past so really enjoyed this. The old skool commentary made me laugh 🙂

My “shocked” vote is on the triangle of blusher, it’s wow just wow!

  5. lol. but they sure made it work.

  6. I remember years ago there was a product called “Silk” or “Sylk”, cant’remember the spelling. It was a powder you mixed with warm water and used as a rinse on the hair to get rid of all the build up from styling products like that hairspray. I remember seeing it done a few times. There would be clusters of what looked like grey beads in the hair, which was the build up as it was stripped off the hair by the remover, which had to be combed out and the hair rinsed again. Really tedious process. I’m glad modern haircare isn’t like that.

I’ve seen the blusher video before and you just sit there with your mouth open, don’t you. LOL!

Hysterical! How entertaining and how far we have come!

  10. The kind of time these women put into hair alone!
I don’t have the patience to blow dry my hair sometimes…

The Daily Mail have picked up this story, I hope you got some credit/pay

  12. Putting on makeup in less than 10 minutes in the morning is hard enough let alone having a geometry lesson all over your face! lol

I can’t laugh at the hair spray though, I used loads when I had mohican in high school so it was bulletproof too!
