Call The Midwife Beauty Range

Remember all the Downton Abbey beauty hoo-ha across the pond last Christmas? I don’t know if favourite Sunday night viewing, Call The Midwife, is syndicated in the US, but if it is, then CTM could be the new Downton in terms of beauty. The Call The Midwife Beauty Range is coming to Marks & Spencers in October – it’s been given a dose of British Humour with products such as Stiff Upper Lipsalve and Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness Soap Trio. There’s even a nail polish set!

I think it’s really fun. Oh, and if you’re still hanking after Lady Mary’s lavender sachets or the like, there are some new Downton products including a candle in a very elegant Downton tea cup.

I always wonder if the same effort goes into the formulating and developing of these kinds of products as the likes of M&S would make with making their regular own brand lines. Rightly or wrongly I imagine that this type of merchandise (especially tv show-branded ranges) tends to be more about the fun/novelty factor and tapping into a ready-made audience, making a quick buck off the back of the success of the show, rather than meticulously honing the performance and efficacy of a product. Sure M&S must have high standards but I’d have lower expectations from Call The Midwife products than their regular ranges.

Do you think that’s an unfair assumption?

no I don’t.. I think this range falls firmly into ‘gifting’ rather than beauty.

BTW – just want to add that I was in no way implying any negative connotations about your particular collaboration with M&S which I see as an entirely different prospect…..just to be clear! Your range sounds fab and I’m looking forward to seeing it in store. Congrats!

They will go nuts for it in the US. I read the MUA and few other US based boards and they LOVE Call The Midwife.

M&S beauty is really good,I swear by their neck cream. But don’t fancy this.

It’s on PBS every Sunday evening…PBS is public television…more highbrow and educational TV…anyhow I’m American and I watch both on PBS…I would purchase but mainly for the novelty of it.

I’m just going to end up buying loas from this range, maybe I ought to try a couple of bits before going mad!

I could kind of understand the Downton Abbey makeup range because the family were wealthy (I think, I never actually watched it myself!) and makeup was something they could wear if they wanted to (although I’m not sure if this was something they did much at that time). But when it comes to Call the midwife they were midwives (obviously) and although as far as I remember one of them obviously wore makeup I don’t think it’s something they were really concerned with. I’m still kind of curious to see what’s in it though (maybe because I actually worked on Call the midwife and appeared in it!) x

Okay, I am having a bit of a chuckle from all these tv show based beauty items. I am sorry this didn’t occur in the late 80’s, I would have loved to see what items would have been made by the duo Smith & Jones for their show The World According to Smith & Jones, or The Young Ones.

I bet Cliff Richards would have had some great skin care line for is youthful appearance.

And I still miss M & S on Oxford Street!
