Beauty Business News : 25% Tariff on US Imported Make Up

This is just a very brief posting about something that appeared on Sky News (HERE) this morning. My friend @epiphannie flagged it up to me earlier today – I’ve spoken to a couple of beauty brands who literally know nothing about it! So, the quote, concerning retaliatory tariffs on US imported goods (remember the US slapped a huge tariff on the importation of  European steel) is this:

Officials in Brussels, spearheading the member states’ response, said the list of US imports that will now face an extra duty at the EU border includes steel and aluminium products, agricultural goods and a variety of other products.

Duties of 25% will be applied to the raft of US goods worth €2.8bn – including bourbon, make-up and motorbikes – from 22 June.”

Did you spot that make-up is included? MAKE UP? Looks like it’s true.. the list (HERE) includes Lip make-up preparations, Eye make-up preparations, Manicure or pedicure preparations, Make-up or skin care powders, incl. baby powders, whether or not compressed (excl. medicaments) and Hair Lacquer, It also looks like sanitary products and some bizarre stuff (women’s or girl’s breeches for example!) will also incur the tarrif if they’re imported from the US. This all begins tomorrow (if you want your favourite MAC product stock up now HERE!) but you won’t see a price hike straight away because it doesn’t apply to existing stock, only stock imported from tomorrow (22nd). It’s possible that you won’t see a hike at all because it may be that brands choose to absorb the excess themselves (unlikely) or do a half-and-half so it doesn’t seem so steep.

I find it so weird that nobody is talking about this – 25% is a lot!

Hi Jane, I just can’t get my head around this. There is no way companies will absorb a 25% increase and no way consumers will be happy to pay the extra 25% – that is a huge amount! So will that mean the UK will end up no longer carrying US makeup/skin care lines? This is absolutely ridiculous and really quite scary if true.

I keep thinking that I’ve misunderstood but I’ve been over and over it.. and I don’t think I have. Skin care doesn’t seem to be on the list (check it – it’s 10 pages long!)..

    2. Lizzie

Agreed. We already saw prices shoot up right after the Brexit vote for unprovable reasons. There’s no way UK consumers can swallow an additional 25%.

In my opinion, there is no problem for the companies to absorb a 25% increase. New Slavery and low-paid workers, through products produced in the global economy, do huge profits.

What about US perfume brands, I imagine if make up is included then it will be also.

    1. Jane

doesn’t look like fragrance is on the list.

        Thank you, Jane.

I was asking about this on a shopping forum QVC UK the shopping channel. Most of the brands they sell are US, clothes, cosmetics(IT Cosmetics, Laura Geller, Mally, Philosophy etc), even household goods. Someone thought as the products are usually not made in the US then they would not be hit. But I thought, well that won’t be much of a hit back tariff wise. I said would it not be where the parent company is registered?

So Estee Lauder is known as a US brand but has their products made worldwide will the governments think ‘Oh but EL make X product in Italy so that is okay’? The steel business is worth billions to many countries with jobs and of course exports. Will China, the EU, the UK etc make it not worth the effect to hit back with tariffs because the products are made say in Italy? I doubt it.

  3. This is baffling! I think one reason no one has talked about this yet is because no one knows what trade deals will be in place for the UK after Brexit next year, it’s all still up in the air! So it could very well be that the increase will last from 22nd June till 29th March and then something else kicks in.

What a mess. This is crazy! I’m just wondering how they’ll determine place of origin. Just because something is made in one place it could also be packaged in another. This is tit for tat politics that will have a huge impact on people’s jobs.

  5. This is extortionate! How come, as you say, no one is talking about it!

It’s insane for the EU to be doing this – does it not realise that it will hit consumer’s pockets – the little person on the street who wishes to use make-up from the US will have to pay for this whilst the Eurocrats with their deep, deep, pay packets (that we pay for BTW and have not even been consulted on this) will probably not even feel a 25% extra tariff hit! The only thing I can say is lobby your MP – or whomever represents you in the EU for your country (and even our EU UK minsters – yes we still pay for their wages); I’m furious about this.

  7. Unless they’ve changed this, I believe MAC primarily manufactured in Canada, so hopefully this won’t affect MAC products imported into the UK / EU.

    Wow.
In Germany, we pay 19% tax on nearly all goods and services we buy (food and books are taxed at 7%). So if an item gets more expensive, we pay an even bigger amount once you factor in the 19%.

I wonder how this will play out in real time. .. M.A.C. etc is already fairly expensive here; I don’t think people will still buy as much stuff from the U.S. anymore.

Do you happen to know what will happen with U.S. brands that have part of their production in China or Italy ?

    1. Jane

I honestly don’t know yet Sophie – I’ve had the same thoughts but no time to research!
