Even as an experienced fashion fan, the word ‘separates’ strikes fear into my heart. Summer dressing feels so simple, but winter dressing can be so much more interesting. However, as much as you want to nod to a trend you will want to make sure that you find something to suit your personal style and shape. An elegant pussy-bow blouse and A-line skirt may look fabulous in a glossy, but if you add a too-done up-do you are one step away from Mrs. Slocombe. It is all about getting the elements right so that you look fresh and modern.

This Zara Pleated Skirt (£39.99), above, is the perfect multi-tasker. It has an elegant cut, but the khaki hue and chiffon pleating bring it totally up-to-date. To keep the look streamlined go for thesublime Jigsaw Silk and Cotton Polo Neck (£79) which is a luxury take on a classic sweater. For daytime do something unexpected and team the look with these Pacific by Kurt Geiger Suede Boots £220 which are a chic alternative to heels. We have been debating the trouser – can we brave a move from our waxed jeans to full-on leather? It is brave choice, but if you do it, do it well! These butter soft Autograph at Marks and Spencer Zipped Leather Trousers £129) are beautifully tailored and the length adds elegance (below).

To contrast entirely, the above Ted Baker Coral Ribbed Peplum Sweater (£109) accentuates your waist and will brighten up any skin tone. For chic feet, these Dune Suede Stiletto Ankle Boots (£115) again soften up the leather look and will give you leaner, longer pins.

Well, if we are braving leather we may as well embrace the elasticated waist! A few seasons ago, the thought of an elasticated waist plus a matchy-matchy print would have put me in mind of Hyacinth Bucket.

This season you can embrace the look and this fabulous Somerset By Alice Temperley Kimono Print Top (£79) and Trousers (£89, not seen) are great together.

Keep it low-key and add these Hobbs Mara Court Shoes (£139) for a thoroughly modern flourish.
