Chantecaille Magnolia Palette
Chantecaille Magnolia Palette

The official title for this floral palette is Le Magnolia Eye & Cheek Palette. Your eyes will water when I tell you that it’s £74. But, every year, Chantecaille get behind an environmental cause and raise money from the sales of each palette. It’s not a huge amount – 5% – but these numbers do add up. This year, they’ve chosen TRAFFIC International Fairwild Standard.

The magnolia design represents the Houpu Magnolia tree – harvested into extinction. While most of us will have no particular emotional connection to the Houpu tree, it’s the bigger picture that Chantecaille is targeting. The fact that many plants, if not harvested sustainably, will simply not exist any more. That won’t affect you until you need a medicine, for example, that is no longer available because the raw ingredient doesn’t exist any more. The Houpu Magnolia tree is a good example; widely used in both medecine and cosmetics, it simply doesn’t exist in the wild now. So, a cosmetic brand making a point about how environmentally damaging the cosmetic industry can be is quite something. The TRAFFIC International Fairwild Standard tries to ensure sustainability in the wild so that things that we won’t miss until we really, really need them won’t disappear.

Inside the palette are three eye colours and a peachy cheek colour. The palette is refillable. It’s already launched in the US, but hits Harrods, Liberty, Fenwick Bond St, and SpaceNK, amongst others, in February.
