August is traditionally a quiet month for beauty launches – jolly good luck in trying to get hold of a PR in peak holiday month! So, I’ve dug into my stash of Fresh favourites that I’ve been quietly enjoying. I love a fragranced candle and I’ve lost count of the number of Fresh candles I’ve burned over the years, but over the spring I think I just got a bit fed up of them and lost track of what I actually like for myself as opposed to testing for the blog. This one is Cannabis Santal (and the only legitimate cannabis that’s ever been in my house, might I say!) which is a quite a deep fragrance that I wouldn’t want on my skin but diluted with the air is rather comforting. There’s a bit of patchouli in there, which isn’t my favourite thing, but blended with chocolate and cannabis amouts to a warm, embracing fragrance that makes you want to inhale and relax.

However, it’s the Sugar range that never fails to make me smile – Sugar Lychee is every bit a summer fragrance – beautiful and fresh on the skin. It doesn’t come in candle form which is such a shame, but easily next best is Sugar Lemon and then Brown Sugar.. lemons and caramel but not in a fake foodie form. The Sake Candle is all peach nectar and mandarins… easily as addictive as my favourite Sake Bath.

These candles are more than adequate to fragrance my kitchen and also leave an olfactory trail through the rooms off the kitchen, but they’re not overwhelmingly strong. I consider them to be at the treat end of my budget for such things (£45) but if something makes you smile when you walk into a room, it’s hitting the right spot. I was sent the Cannibis Santal, but have bought, and will continue to buy (occasionally) the Sake and Sugar Lemon for just being an absolute, frivolous, just-because-it’s-lovely gift to self.

At the weekend I left a citronella candle on my outside table (we had dinner with friends in the garden) – a gust of wind blew the tablecloth over the candle which caught fire and while Mr BBB and I sat inside wondering who was having a BBQ, it took hold and also set the table on fire. My lovely table! Luckily, I saw flames out of the kitchen window before any foliage caught and sprayed the fire out with the hose. BUT, it’s just a good time to remind you to put all candles, inside and out, out before you leave them unattended.
