Clinique Nail Enamel 2013

Meet the new 5 Free nail enamels from Clinique, launching on 12th May (Debenhams exclusive). Clinique has done nail polishes in the past but these could not be further from the old-style (little bit dull) previous polishes.

It’s billed as a nail enamel for sensitive skin, and I’m afraid my bull-shit radar went into full alert when I was told that some people get contact dermatitis from their nail polish. But, in fact, it turns out that this is indeed the case. The very lovely lady who painted my nails said that one of the first things she learned at beauty school was not to wear nail polish to do facials in case it upset anyone’s skin. I believe that nurses also don’t wear it for the same reasons (bar the facial aspect, obviously!).

The shades are lovely – twelve permanent colours and nine limited edition shades for summer make a beautiful line-up and a good selection – and it is a distinct advantage that it is unlikely to cause any allergies (it took Clinique six years to come up with this formula).

My nails here are in Summer In the City (I think! ReallyRee and I managed to swap bags by mistake, so I have her Red Red Red and she has my shade!). It’s glossy, nicely colour saturated and a very vibrant shade.

If I stood this range next to something like OPI or Nails Inc, then it probably wouldn’t compare as well, but it’s for a different thing, and the technological challenges of making an allergy free nail polish are huge so I feel it’s quite an accomplishment. Polishes will retail for £12 each.

Nurses don’t wear nail polish so you can tell if they have washed their hands (pateiularly under the nails) properly.

I always wondered why Clinique never did nail polish…! I never knew people had allergies! So good on them for coming up with a formula. 6 years is a LONG time!

I definitely have problems with a lot of nail varnishes. The one and only time I had gel nails done, I had a horrendous reaction on my eyelids. So I’ll definitely check these out.

  6. Gorgeous colours. Like I need more.

  7. Really impressive colours and backstory – a really unique range! x

When I trained as a beauty therapist I was told that a therapist should not wear nail polish due to health and safety…. Cleanliness as you need to see you have cleaned beneath and around the nails correctly and also to ensure nothing chips off and gets into a clients eyes, nose or mouth while doing a facial. I am not ruling out the science behind this product however it is not the primary reason for medical and beauty professionals not wearing polish. I hope it can stop reactions and allow people with sensitive skin to wear polish that would be a big enough selling point alone.

About time! Pleased to see Clinique launch a nail colour range, it looks like a great colour collection too. I would also have been sceptical about the allergy claim too, but now I’ve thought about it it makes sense.

I’m curious as to how they can claim these won’t set off allergies – there are so many sensitivities that people can have to different ingredients? I’m allergic to rose oils yet they’re in so many products because it’s not a common allergy so fine for most people.
